Episode #019 – Iterating on The Innovation Lab



chemistryToday, we are joined by Dr. Steven Crawford who we did a game of 21 questions with way back on episode #013. That was a fun conversation. Who am I kidding? Every conversation with Steven is a fun conversation. Besides being a down to earth and a charming and very likable individual, Steven also has over 20 years of higher education and distance learning experience and is the Associate Director of Academic Innovation at Arizona State University’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation. His role is to collaborate with the College’s programs to implement pedagogical and technological strategies that increase student outcomes in face-to-face, blended, and online courses.

He’s a professional.

He’s a scholar.

He’s an inspiration.

Today, we explore the design thinking mindset of iteration in light of the first instance of the Innovation Lab and the pending second instance of it coming up in 2017. To do this we are going to do a SWOT analysis around the innovation lab. If you’re not familiar with what a SWOT analysis is, SWOT stands for exploring strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. If you were involved this past year and April in the innovation lab we’d love to get feedback from you going forward and would love to hear your thoughts on ideas for promoting design thinking processes for innovation in the next year’s lab.

Episode #018 – Understanding Empathy

So we took a break last week, but we are back at it as we enter the excitement new academic year. What better place for us to revisit the design thinking mindset of empathy that we began in episode 15. In this episode number 18, Angela, Ben and I reflect on our gut reactions to the nuances of that word itself, empath, and if it is the best fit for that phase of design thinking. As usual, we also mixed concepts of empathy with fun chatter around good food and music also. Hope you enjoy the conversation.

Digging Into Empathy

  • Let’s unpack the video a little bit – what makes total sense in here?  And which parts are hard to tackle or implement?
  • How does empathy connect to the define stage of the design thinking process?  Are they concrete steps or squidged up for you?
  • Do you think that empathy is one of the easier or one of the harder steps in the design thinking process?
  • Have you had a recent moment where you have had to be empathetic and it has been a struggle? A stretch? A chore?
  • I struggle with the term Empathy because it is often contextualized in terms of being the preferred response to an intense or sharp event that would otherwise invoke the action of sympathy. But do you think that there is a similar dichotomy in design thinking as well of empathy vs. sympathy?

Episode #016 – Cooking with Angus


honey loopThe Innovation LabCast is a conversation among friends and in this episode, I (Dave Goodrich) have the pleasure of welcoming a good friend of mine to the conversation who I’ve been friends with since high school. It was there where we played soccer and basketball together and we have played in a handful of bands together. Beyond being a really good friend of mine over the years, Noah and my paths have continued to cross professionally on multiple occasions related in someway to educational technology. Noah is an accomplished musician and videographer whose work has spanned the public and private sectors in journalistic and commercial endeavors and most recently in highlighting the good work happening in Michigan through Grand Rapids Community College. Most recently, Noah has directed and produced a whole TV series called Cooking with Angus that premiered the ABC affiliate channel 13 in West Michigan last February. Beyond highlighted the culinary arts program at GRCC, it provided a globally immersive learning experience for some students in the program. Tonight, we explore the relationship of quality educational technology investments that simultaneously serve academic objectives and marketing purposes. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Noah DeSmit.

We’ve got a LabCast for you today.

I’ve been looking forward to the episode where I would be able to introduce you to a person in my life who has served me as a professional advisor, a spiritual guru and a friend. In fact, he is the person I credit for giving me a chance to get started in this field of instructional design by believing in me really early on as a curious educator wanting to explore this field further.

Dr. Randy Meredith has an extensive career of serving in these capacities for many people like myself. At the time that I first met him he was the director of the office of academic technology at Spring Arbor University and was A great boss and supervisor for that whole department which I had the pleasure of experiencing firsthand. Randy’s dissertation was on “The Impact of Podcasting on Perceived Learning, Classroom Community, and Preferred Context for Podcast Consumption” and today Benjamin Scragg and I were able to pick his brain on the findings of his study in light of our own experiments with podcasting through this innovation LabCast. It was a fun conversation as anticipated. I hope you enjoy it and I’m looking forward to continuing these conversations and further episodes going forward.
